115th College Blog Post - 2016 - What a year!

2016 will most likely be remembered as the year with the most lows in one year.

Italy has been hit by two earthquakes and have shaken many buildings to the core.

Nearly everyday has the news talking about the besieged city of Aleppo where Russian-backed Syrian government forces bombard the rebel held areas, reducing the city's streets and houses to to piles of concrete.  One man talked about how it took 4,000 years and hundreds of generations to build the city, and how it's take one generation under 4 years to destroy it.  Only this month, they're evacuating the people out (on-and-off).

On the 23rd of June, the UK voted to leave the European Union, causing David Cameron to resign as Prime Minister and let Theresa May take the job, becoming the second female British Prime Minister.  Now the departure from the EU is under the course of Brexit, but there those who are unhappy.

The only up, in my view, is, of course, the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. It is remembered as Britain's most successful games aboard with more medals then London 2012.  All of this despite fears of the outbreak of the Zika virus and the news of nation-backed cheating and drug tests showing illegal use by those taking part.

I hope that 2017 will be much better for us all.

Wish us all luck.

Christmas Holidays as begun!

This week began slightly quiet, for once.  Monday went by very quickly with a quick tidy up of a document I made an error in.  But I forgot to up in my application for next year in.

Today, Wednesday, I was slightly late, as I finished making my Christmas cards I was bringing in before I left home this morning.  This morning, Anne was late too, so it wasn't too bad.  With Anne's help, I have placed in my application for next year and I hope to study for NC Media.

This Friday is only a half-day, and Anne's not bothering about, so either am I.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

14th of December 2016

The last full week of College before the Christmas Holidays is half done.  Next week is most likely to be finished on Wednesday or Thursday due to the fact Christmas will be over the following weekend, with College being reopened for students on the 9th of January.

Today is the 105th anniversary of Roald Amundsen's South Pole expedition reaching the South Pole, thus winning the Race to South Pole, and perhaps overshadowed by Captain Scott.  I can't believe that it was that long ago.

Wish us all luck.  And a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year!

Considering next year

First full week of December gone, and just about two weeks left before we finish for Christmas.  It's hard to believe that Christmas is almost here.

Today, Anne of SkillZone and I were talking about next year and one of the subjects we talked was about applying for next year.  I had applied for NC Media for this year, but I got an interview for the course and, sadly, I didn't get onto the course, so I decided the do my ECDL Advanced Word course.

Anne mentioned that she can help me fill in the application for NC Media.  I hope, with Anne's help, I might get onto the NC Media course for next year.

I hope this Christmas will go well for all of this.

Wish us all luck.

Happy St. Andrew's Day

Happy St. Andrew's Day!

It's the end end of November - I can't believe it! Just 25 days till Christmas!

My ECDL Advanced Word is getting on well.  One part of the course gives us who's studying it a sample test.  So far I have been going through the booklet, but today I decided the have an experiment with the Sample Test, and I think that I did about fine with it.  It was quite fun doing it as it got me thinking how to work the tasks given.  I think that I might go over the booklet again to be sure, then give the sample test another experiment till I feel ready to do the assessment for the course.

In relation to my previous blog, one event of the First World War that has gone by quietly, the hundredth anniversary of the sinking hospital ship, and sister of the in-famous Titanic, the Britannic.  After striking a mine, the largest ship to be sunk during the four-year-conflict sank within 55 minutes and with about 30 people.  Despite having more lifeboats than her elder sister, the Britannic didn't launch all of her lifeboats.  I think that it's sad that the Britannic isn't mention as much as the Titanic. I hope that neither of the ships will be forgotten.

I have noticed at college that they offer apprenticeship courses, so I have asked about for more information.  It seems that I might need to have a job to take the course, but hopefully more information will come my way and work something out.

I hope that everyone at college is doing well.

Wish us all luck.  And a happy St. Andrew's Day.

110th College Blog - A Fortnight of Remembrance

The past fortnight here at college has been one full of remembrances for those who died during the "War To End All Wars".  On Friday the 11th, the 98th Anniversary of Armistice Day, when the Great War ended at the eleventh of the eleventh of the eleventh month, we had a two minute silence, shared by the nation, and again on Sunday, the 13th, Remembrance Sunday, the nation fell silent again in respect.  Last week, on the 18th, the nation marked the "official" end of the Battle of the Somme which began on the 1st of July, one hundred years again, and with the bloodiest day for the British Army (19,240 killed).

The 18th of November may be the "official" end of the battle, but it was decided by generals meeting after the war.  The actual battle is believed by expects and historians to have lasted till about March the following year when the German tactfully retreated to the Hindenburg Line.  The battle taught the Germans how to become more prepared for defencive tactics in 1917; Passchendaele is the famous example.

The BBC website has a link to a site called Your Somme.  Here you can put in your name, postcode and, depending on the BBC Radio station you choose by county or country of the UK, you can then choose a regiment, then, after scrolling down the web page, you can learn of the losses your regiment faced on the first day and the battle overall.

For example, since I live in Inverness, I could have been part of the Seaforth Highlanders, who had 400 casualties (129 killed) on the first day, and 995 killed over the 141 days of fighting.  995 out of 419,654 of killed, wounded or missing British soldiers.

Another example is, being from Northumberland, I'd might have been in the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers, who had 1,643 killed on the first day, and 4,250 killed over the course of the battle.

All for 7 miles of enemy land.

I hope that we will always remember them and those who fought and died in later wars.

During my free time, I go to a writing class at Eden Court and I do a writing blog.  One of the writing class's homework in 2014 used the title "Foreign Fields".  So I wrote a poem in which a father's son asks his father why they're going to a foreign field and the father tells him it's to place a poppy in remembrance of a family member who fought and died in the Great War.  I decided the publish it on my writing blog.  Here's a link to Foreign Fields, and I hope that you will enjoy it.

We're already started to see the first hint of winter, frost here at college with snow up in the mountains.  Christmas is coming.

Wish us all luck.

I am not a student, I am a student

The few weeks since I returned from the October Holidays have been an interesting time: I wasn't classed as a student of Inverness College.

The problem really was because somebody in the Admin department who sorted continuing students didn't get the course code for the ECDL Advanced Word course I'm doing and when I got back from my weekend down in Newcastle, I found I couldn't get into my college email.  I went to college to investigate and found out the problem.  So I was studying ECDL, but not a student of Inverness College.

But I'm glad to say that I'm back at College as a student.  Anne, who works at College and sorts the ECDL, helped me figure out the problem and get the proper paperwork to prove the I was studying the ECDL course and get my College problem fixed, so now I am a student at Inverness College, studying ECDL Advanced Word.  And so far, so good.

I have met up with a few of those with whom I studied NC Digital Media Level 5 last year.  Donald is studying NC Media, and the others are doing HNC Computing.  I wish them all the best of luck.

Wish us all luck.

October Holidays Approaching

The October Holidays is almost upon us.  For many, it will be just the one week, with the other week as a "Reading Week".  But I'm not that interested in that, I'll just take my time with my ECDL work, and so far so good.  (I just need to worry about my print balance for when the tasks asks me to print my work.)

Just Wednesday, then I've got a long weekend off.  I hope that it will go well.  I have bumped into a few from my previous course here and there, but not many.  I hope that they're doing well.

Wish us all luck.

Returning to College

Hi all

I have returned to College, and this year I'm studying Advanced ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) and I'm doing Word Processing.  I started this module last year, but I was studying Digital Media last year, completing all but one class, and I didn't get round to studying ECDL Advanced.

I had hoped to get on NC Media, but I'm contend to studying ECDL Advanced Word this year and seen what can be done for class I didn't get to complete last year.  I have seen a couple of people from last year and they seem to be doing well.

I hope that this year goes well for all of us.

Week 38 - Last Day!

This is it! - The Last Day of NC Digital Media Level 6.

It's really sad that the end of the course has come, but I hope to be back next year and carry on my media studies that are great fun to study.  Our lecturer David is retiring and an Additional Support staff member, Solveig, who has helped me through my years at college, is leaving too.  They've been good friends and I will miss them very much.

Many of us on the NC course are moving onto HNC Computing, and I wish them all the best of luck for the course ahead of them.

I hope that next year goes well for us all and for me.  Thank you for following me this year, it has been an interesting year.  Hopefully see you next year.

Wish us all luck.

Week 38 - The Final Week of College Begins!

It's the Final Week of NC Digital Media Level 6! - I still can't believe it.

So far for David, DME is complete, but the Animation part is proving to be a nightmare.  It works before it's loaded up, but finding it after it's loaded is a problem as it comes up with file/directory error message.  But then again, it only seems to work when it likes, and every method that is tried will seem to work one of us on the course, but once we try to make it work for all of us, the method seems to stop working altogether.  I have no hope for the class anymore now, despite the fact that it's not a core unit.

But thankfully, at about half past four in the afternoon, I was able to complete the uploading and I gave the link to David for marking.  All that is needed to do is finish the paperwork and hope that it'll be a pass.

This week is likely be about any amendments needing done, and as far as I'm aware, I have no amendments to do.

I hope that this week goes well for all of us.

Wish us all luck.

Week 37 - Review of the Week

One week of college left - I can't believe it that the course is all but over.

Most of my classes are done, just David's Animation class that's in need of finishing because nobody seems to know a thing about the play/pause action buttons David's asking for.  One piece of advice I'd get about the Adobe Flash Professional is if you're going to make an animated piece, create it in one go.  Don't do one part, leave it and then come back to do the next part another time.

For Adrian, the class's workbook log is complete, handed in and passed.

I have applied for college next year, this time I'll be doing a Media course instead of a Computing course.  I will have an interview for a place on the course then I'll have to wait and see if I'll be on the course.

Next week is all about amendments for this course.  I don't have any amendments to do, but I'll attend college all the same.

I hope that next week (our last week) goes well for all of us.

Wish us all luck.

Week 37 - Two Weeks Left!

We have two weeks left! - It feels like a race to get as much work done as possible.

I have submitted another application for net year at college, all I can do now is to wait and see.

I have finished Communications - and it was a good class despite the changing lecturers for the class.

We are struggling to find a way to control our animation on the webpages we put the animations on (play, pause and stop).  Donald has tried, but just can't get it to work.  In fact the video David gave us to figure out how to make the command buttons is using an older version of the Flash Player (the video was downloaded in 2011).  Thankfully Slywester has given a link that seems to give more information than David's link.  Hopefully we get somewhere with the video.

In Suzanne's Software Development, I will likely have to do a resit assessment for the class.  The same can be said for her Maths class, as I haven't heard of my assessment results.

In Adrian's PAT last week, we did an assessment, hopefully we'll find out how we did.  The same for Adrian's Network Report.

Updated at 17.03: Working on the Animation is proving hard, but thankfully we might be able to get there, and we still have at least a week to do it.

I hope that this week goes well for all of us.

Wish us all luck.

Review of Week 36 - What a week!

2 weeks left now. What week! - Looking back, it feels chaotic.

I need to make action buttons for David's Animation piece, Donald has tried to make a couple but was had problems making it work.  We have better ask David next Monday.

Suzanne's Maths class is chaos, many of us are ahead, while others are far behind.  I have attempted the Outcome 4 Assessment, but I'm not so sure about it.  I've done what the questions asked of me.

I have attempted, and failed, Software Development's Outcome 1 Assessment.  Chances are I'll be doing a re-sit.

For Adrian's Network class, all that is needed done is the logbook report on the network I created with Donald.

I hope that next week and the last two weeks goes well for all of us.

Wish us all luck.

Week 36 - Three Weeks of College Left

Three weeks left! - I can't believe it, it gives the feeling that there still tons of work to do.

For David, I think that I might only just manage the animation part, since David is still trying to get the DME video all done.  I have managed to cause the seagull to grow in size from start to finish.

In Suzanne's Tuesday's Troubleshooting class, I will likely be revising for the Maths class's assessment.  Software Development is up for question.

On Wednesday, we will have the second part of the Maths Outcome 3 assessment, then we will have Responsibility of Employment assessment during our PAT class.

Thursday is likely be just the same as last week, making sure that any unfinished work are done and handed in.

I hope that this week goes well us all.

Wish us all luck.

100th College Blog - Review of Week 35 and of time blogging

My 100th College Blog - I just can't believe that I've posted a hundred college blogs.

I started my College Blog last year when Gordon asked us to do some blogs for the class Weblogs.  At first, I was uncertain about doing blogs, but Gordon helped me get into it and set me up.  Here's a link to my first College Blog, published all the way back on 27th of August 2014.  I can't believe that I've done a 100 blogs over the past two years, with just over 1280 viewers.  I hope to keep it up if and when possible.

David is happy of my video for the DME class, and so am I.  Gordon has seen the video and has given a "Well done" review.  Gordon has suggested that I perhaps take an NC Media course next year instead of HNC Computing, and thinking it over, I agree.  I think that I'll do some research on that line of the course and before hopefully apply.

On Tuesday, I passed for the Troubleshooting report for Outcomes 2, 3 and 4, and I submitted my report for the Software Development class.  The Software Development class has been a struggle I must admit, due the amount of work given and the short time given to study the work.

On Wednesday in Maths, we did the first part of Outcome 3 Assessment, the second part will be done next week.

In answer of the maths question from my previous blog, here's the link to it, and here's the answers below:
F = £18
h = £7.50
And the answer for F+8h is £78.
Well done if you got the correct answers.

We had a Network Mock Assessment, then the real Assessment.  Adrian has sent us an email via Suzanne that it was a pass.

Today (Thursday) is just about revising for the second part of the Maths Outcome 3 Assessment.

Next week hopefully go well for us all and we will pass as many of our assessments as possible.  I know I won't get the Group Award for the course, I can do my best for the rest of the course.

Wish us all luck.

Week 35 - Busy week ahead - and a little challenge for you

Four weeks of the course - unbelievable!

And it looks like it's to be a busy week with a few assessments.

David talks of a video of a helicopter he took, but I'm finding it hard to find, or even play, the video so I can see it.  I'm finding myself struggling on the animation part for David.  David has told us that we'll have a visitor next week, looking at the HNC level.

Tuesday (tomorrow) will most likely be finishing up reports for troubleshooting and software development.

On Wednesday, in Maths we've got an assessment.  I have a meeting with our PAT later, and then after that we will have a Network assessment.

Just out of interest, I'd like to give a little maths test to you, since I've studied this sort of sum in maths.

Using a way to solve Simultaneous Equations, find the number figure for F (the day's wages) and h the hour rate for every hour of work) using the following formulas:

     F+3h=£40.50
     F+5h=£55.50

Then find the wages for an 8 hour rate using the formula: F+8h.

I'll give the answer in my next blog at the end of the week.  Good luck.

Thursday is not that clear, but the last class of the day PC Passport I think I have finished with it, but I'll use the time for the Maths class.

I hope that this week goes well for all of us and you will find out the figures for F and h.

Wish us all luck.

Week 34 - Review of the week

What a week! Just four week left from Monday!

Suzanne's Tuesday class Troubleshooting, needs the report on Outcomes 2, 3 and 4 to be finished
Software Development class needs just the report typed up and handed in before we do the multiple-choice assessment.

Suzanne's Wednesday Maths class went well.  We're doing Outcome 3, in which we solve the equation of a straight line on a graph and figure out the formula from a two versions of the same formula,  it's quite fun.  Our Outcome 3 Assessment is next week.

Adrian's Network class went well, and Donald and I in our own group was able to re-create last week's network and get the three computers to work and connect a printer to the network and print off a Notepad file.  Next week, I have a PAT meeting with Adrian.  I hope that it goes well.

For Gordon's Hardware re-sit assessment, I'm afraid that I didn't get to pass the subject.

For Suzanne's PC Passport class, I think that just need to revise for a multiple-choice assessment as I have finished and handed in my assessment project to Suzanne.  Although Suzanne asked if I was ready for it today and I agreed to do it, and I passed.  The class may be finished for me, but Suzanne has asked me to keep coming to make sure that the maths class gets done.

I hope that next week goes well for all of us.

Wish us all luck.

Week 34 - Sleepy Start of the week

Five weeks of college left - at best 31 days! Unbelievable!

All we need to do within these five weeks left of the course is to sort out what assessments we have left and when.

For David, the animation is to be put onto a webpage.  All I need to do is to make an animation somehow.  David seems to change what he asks us to do every week or so.  And if you wish to use Adobe Flash Professional, don't move any of the icons' positions, it's near impossible to put them back.  I hope that I'll get the hand on the animation part of the class.

Update added in at 16.30:
This afternoon, I have completed my paperwork for my video for David and I uploaded the video for David using FileZilla.  I'm happy with my work on the video.
End of Update

Suzanne's Software class on Tuesday will be all about a theory assessment then there will be the write-up of the coding assessment.

In Suzanne's Maths on Wednesday, we will be learning Outcome 3 before the assessment for the outcome next week.

I will hopefully complete my Hardware multiple-choice assessment re-sit on Wednesday (which will be verbal to make things easier for me).

In Adrian's network class, we will connecting  printer to our pieces of network.

I hope that this week goes well for all of us.

Wish us all luck.

Review of Week 33 - Season of Assessments under way

Another week done, just another five weeks of college left.  It's unbelievable thinking about that and with so much left to do.

Monday was our day off due to the May Day Bank Holiday happening on the previous day (Sunday) and it's usually a custom to have the first of May off.

Tuesday in Suzanne's Software Development class, we finished our coding and submitted it to Suzanne.  Her Troubleshooting class is all about finishing up a report for Outcome 2, 3 and 4.

Wednesday had an Maths Outcome 2 assessment for us (and I passed).  Adrian's Network class had us put into teams and do a network connection between some computer we set up.  I was teamed up with Donald (not the Donald Trump).  We had three computers connected to the network, but only two connected fine for some unknown reason.  Then, one of the tasks was to create a shared folder, and access the folder from another computer using the network, but Adrian, when we were connecting the computer, accidently deleted the desktop access, and the way to the shared folder, so Donald and I had to do the process again form the one computer that still had the network access to the neighbouring computer's desktop.  And it worked, much to our joy.  A lot of fun.  Next week we'll be connecting to a printer hopefully and print the shared file.

Today, Thursday, we are working on our PC Passport assessment project.  I've already done the database part in Access (and it was hard) and I have just done profit/loss part in Excel (and it was a lot easier).  Suzanne as announced that the multiple choice assessment for the class will be in two weeks time (the 19th).

Next we've got the theory assessment for Suzanne's software class, and I will hopefully have a resit to a hardware class assessment I've been in need of doing since the start of the semester.

On the whole, I'd say that it's been a good week for us all.  I hope that next week will go well for all of us.

Wish us all luck.

95th College Blog - Week 32 - What a week! The Season of Assessments has begun.

What a week, a week that we've been reminded about our assessments.  The Season of Assessments, as I call this time of the year, really has begun.

Suzanne's software development class just needs me to type up the documentation of the software created for the class's assessment.

In Suzanne's math class, we have been looking at Outcome 2, and we have an assessment of the outcome next Wednesday.  In Adrain's Network class, we've done some knowledge tests (two of them) with a third to do at home.

In Suzanne's Thursday PC Passport, the database (Access) part is done, and I have started on the  spreadsheet (Excel) part.  So far the Excel has gone very well.

Next Monday, we have the day off due the May Day holiday.

I hope that next week will go well for all of us and that we will succeed in our Season of Assessments.

Wish us all luck.

Week 32 - Busy weekend and quiet start again

Over the weekend, I was busy sorting the sum for Suzanne's database project, and with help from my dad and information from the Help icon in Access, I was able to completed the task, and this morning I was able completed the tasks for the database project that is due in this Thursday.

In David's class, we talked about animation and some animation companies such as Pixar (famous for Monsters, Inc. and Cars) and Aardman Animations (famous for the stop-motion Wallace and Gromit).  For the animations project, we've been asked to do a motion tween of a seagull.

If you wish to have a go for yourself, here's a link for you to try first as it's helpful in telling you how to get started and gets clear instructions in how to start the motion tween:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziwlnbX0huA

I have completed and submitted my application for next year.  David told us that we wish to do the next level up for Digital Media Computing, we have to go to the Moray College UHI, in Elgin.

Next Monday (the 2nd) will be another day off for us as it's the May Day Holiday.

I hope that this week goes well for all of us and that I'll come back to college for HNC Computing Part-time.

Update from later at 16:50:
I have completed my video and I have uploaded it into a MPEG-4 video for David.  David wants us to put our animation pieces of seagulls onto a webpage.  Hopefully for Networking, we may have the visitor from CapGemini to tell us volunteering work.  Suzanne's Software class requires to hand in our coding for our pieces of software on tomorrow (Tuesday).

Wish us all luck.

Reiew of Week 31 - Busy weekend in store

Today the Queen turns 90! Happy Birthday Your Majesty.

End of another week at college for us.

Adrian's PAT class was interesting with the person from Guidance, but the Networking class's visitor didn't come, so we listened to Adrian.

Suzanne's software assessment is almost complete, I think we're so close, but yet so far.  Suzanne's second PC Passport assessment (database part) is madding, its instructions are well out of date each one contradicts each other.  I'm going to have start all over again.

I hope that next week will go well for us all.

Wish us all luck.

Week 31 - Quiet Start and Eight Weeks Left

This week seems to have started quietly.  David is not in, so his classes aren't on today, but I hope to double check all other from college such as Suzanne's software assessment.

When I checked my college diary, I discovered that we have eight weeks left till the course is done.  For Suzanne's maths class, we have about three or four outcomes left to test ourselves with.  Suzanne's software class will likely be as testing as ever this week.

For Adrian's Wednesday classes, both PAT and Networking, we may have visitors.  A visitor from Guidance for PAT to help us sort our future studies next year, and a possible visitor from Capgemini for volunteer work and job ideas in the near future.  Both sound interesting, the first most of all.

I hope that this week goes well for all of us.

Wish us all luck.

Review of Week 30 - An Interesting Week

We have had two assessments this week, both of them yesterday (Wednesday).  The first was mathematics (which I passed) and the other was in out PAT class, I haven't heard of my results yet.

In Suzanne's software class, I have managed to make a good start with the assessment we've been given, just three more pieces or sections of codes to put in and then hope for the best on that.

For Suzanne's PC Passport assessment, one of the tasks asks for a sum to be done inside the Microsoft Access, I must admit, I haven't done that before, I may have to some experiment to get that to work, but I hope to get the hang of it.

I hope that next week will go well for all of us.

Wish us all luck.

90th Blog - Week 30 - We're back

Hi all, we're back from our Easter Holidays.

I'm sorry to say that the holidays past by quickly - perhaps too quickly.

So far, for David's class, the video for DME is nearly done, and we've started looking at Animation and what we need for the class.  For Animation we might be using Adobe Flash Player.  David has given a link to a video about the software and that can be useful in creating an animation for him.  I might need some practice first.  In the second part of David's class, we mentioned the website address for other countries (like uk for Britain and pl for Poland).

I have started to fill my application for next year, I just need to go over some small details with Adrian Bruce when I see him on Wednesday for PAT Class and hopefully send it in and I will wait to see if it will be good enough to get back into college next year.

I think that this week will be the "Time to Wake Up Week" before the period I call the "Season of Assessments" begins.  I hope that this week goes well for all of us.

Wish us all luck.

Week 29 - The Easter Holidays begins

The Easter Holidays has begun for us.  Finally, I thought it would never come.

For David's DME, the video coming on fine and I have replaced some of the clips with other clips.  I think that the video improves every time I work on the video.

In Suzanne's Maths class, we had a pre-assessment practice, and I think that I didn't do too bad; everyone else is very mixed, depending on the question and the lecturer's answers.  Her Software Development is still as furious as ever, we have even been given our assessment, but I had to ask for the due date.  Our OPP class assessment has appeared and we are talking about the other Learning Outcome Assessments for the class.

We are already starting to talk about out next year studies and Adrian has information about that and the forms for next year.

Well, I'm now on a two week holiday, see you when we return in April.

Wish us all luck.

Week 29 - Review of Week 28 and Last Week before the Easter Holidays

Last week ended with our lecturers going on strike over the issue of pay.
Here's a link to the BBC website about the strike:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-35820703

In David's class, we have been told make good progress on our video projects before we present our work to everyone else and that we will have a visitor watching him this afternoon.  Going through my video, I think that the Sailing sung by Rod Stewart doesn't seem right for the video.  I've asked David about the song Caledonia.  David's fine about that, so all I have to do is find the correct version of the song I'd like to use for my video.  I've now the version sung by the Irish group Celtic Woman (that the version is very good).  Now I have to edit and the song and video together.

Just this week and we will be on holiday for Easter.  I'm looking forward to it.

I hope that this week goes well for all of us.

Wish us all luck.

Week 28 - Review of Week 27

Just two weeks till the Easter Holidays.

We managed to avoid the inspectors last week (I think that they avoided us students).  Some of the classes weren't on due the inspectors, but we all got by.  In Network, we were plugging us the network cables into the network plugs and making sure that worked.

Most of us were in for Communications class this morning.  For David's class for the rest of the day, David had warned that the first class weren't on, and the second were under question, so I stayed on to make sure and use the college computers for any other work.  I was the only one left for the afternoon.  Next week, we will be looking at each other's work and heard their opinions.

I hope that this week goes well for all of us.

Wish us all luck.

Week 27 - Week of Inspectors begins

The week with the inspectors have begun, and so far (for today), no sign of the inspectors.

In Communications class this morning, we talked about giving presentations, the points that make a good presentation and the points that make a bad presentation.

In David's DME, I've made new sound recordings and have made start with the movie maker, and David's mentioned about looking for images of helicopters and planes.  I think that Paint.net will be in order for the imaging.

I hope that this week goes well for all of us, even if the inspector don't appear at all.

Wish us all luck.

85th Blog Post - Week 26 - End of a good week

It's now the end of another good week at college.

In Suzanne's Troubleshoot and Secure IT class, we did a 500 - 750 word report on the Computer Misuse Act, Data Protection Act and the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act for the closed-book assessment, I think that I did well on the assessment.  Suzanne was gave us a lot of information in the Software class later in the afternoon.

In Adrian's Network class we created our own lengths of network cables by putting network plugs onto the ends of the wires.  The process was surprisingly easy to do and fun.

For David's class next week, I went around the college campus taking a few photos, so I'll be able to make a start on the video next week.  I'll need to sort out the audio recordings too.

In Suzanne's class today, we are covering trend lines in Excel, quite a simple and easy thing to do.

Next week, we will have inspectors visiting the college, but they'll be more interested in our lecturers than us students.

I hope that next week goes well for all of us.

Wish us all luck.

Week 26 - Sound recordings

In David's DME classes, we all went around the college recording sounds that go on around the building.

The sounds inside are fine, but the sounds from outside are heavily veiled by the wind, which sounds like somebody is blowing into the microphone.  It's horrible to listen to.  On the whole, I don't think that it was a total lose.

We've got an assessment tomorrow morning with Suzanne's Trouble Shooting and Secure IT, I hope that goes well for us.  There a possible assessment for Suzanne's maths class on Wednesday, but we'll see about that.

I hope that this week goes well for all of us.

Wish us all luck.

Week 25 - Review of the week

End of another week at college.

I still have to think hard for the video's plan for David's DME.

For Suzanne's Troubleshoot and Secure IT class, we have an assessment that covers the following Acts:

  • Computer Misuse Act 1990
  • Data Protection Act 1998
  • Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988
I know these Acts reasonably well as I have studied them at least once a year since I started college in 2010.  I hope that I'll do well in the assessment.

We have been told that a group inspectors are going to be coming to the college the week after next (sounds interesting, and we're not sure where they're from).

I hope that we will all do well next week.

Wish us all luck.

Week 25 - Talk of aircraft carriers

Hi all.

This morning, in Communications class, I did a presentation on a Communications project I did last semester.  My lecturer gave a positive review for the presentation.

In David's class, we mentioned about aircraft carriers.  Donald says that the ram at the front of our aircraft carriers don't look nice on the bow of the ships.  David has asked us to create a storyboard for our videos.  I have started to think of a couple of ideas to put into the storyboard.  If David wants a song in the video, I think that I'll listen to the song and work the video round it to see if it would work.  I think that I'll go out and about Inverness College, take photos and videos of the campus and work around them too.

For Wednesday, we have been told that Adrian's class is not on due to Adrian being at a meeting that afternoon.

I hope that this week will go well for all of us.

Wish us all luck.

Week 24 - Review of the week

End of another week at college.

Suzanne's Software class gives its workload like Bang! Bang! Bang!, I'd prefer it like Pop. Pop. Pop.  That would make it much easier to work with.  We didn't have Suzanne's Troubleshoot and Secure IT Systems class as she was in a meeting.  Suzanne's mathematics class is going very well (it's maths after all).

With Adrian, I've had my PAT interview and we all discussed about Networks in our Computing: Plan and Build A Computer Network class.

In Suzanne's PC Passport class, we were given a new database to create to start working on next week for the class.

I hope that next week goes well for all of us.  One or two have started talking about Aberdeen University next year already.  I'm planning the next level of the course (part-time).

Wish us all luck.

80th Blog - Week 24 - Making a start for DME

The beginning of Week 24, and my Eightieth blog - incredible!

In DME, we have made our proposals and handed them in for David to have a look.  David attempted to show how to work Windows Movie Maker, I think that I've had more practice with the software than David has had.  David has asked us to edit the audio (music) for the video if possible.

I hope that David approves of our videos for the course and this week goes well for us.

Wish us all luck.

Week 23 - Review of the week

Hard to believe that it's the end of the week, but I'm glad it is.

I'm struggling to figure out what David is asking us to do for his class, so I asked for some more information about the project he's asking for.

We've got Adrian's first class sorted out at least in the case of where to go to.  We then had a talk about networks in his second class.

Suzanne's software class is asking a very lot of work from us all, I don't know if I'll be able to cope with the work that is yet to come.

We went to a lecture in the Lecture Theatre about how DJ could be related to the course (I'm still trying to figure that part out too).

Suzanne's second semester of PC Passport is starting to make way work-wise.  Creating a query in the database proved tricky due a design mistake and unrelated relationship connections that was easy to correct.  Making a form on the work from the query was just as easy to do.  Just the database booklet to do and later the spreadsheets.

I hope that next week goes well for all of us.

Wish us all luck.

Week 23 - DME's talk of ships

The start of another week at college

In DME we talked about songs for our project.  I might stand by my choices from last week.  Today David mentioned about doing a video around the new college campus, and since its resembles a ship (some say cruise ship, I say aircraft carrier), the video might be related to ships.  I'm not so sure how, but if we did such a project, it could be interesting all the same.  Chances are we will be using Windows Movie Maker to make the video.  Just thinking about the class makes me think that I'll need to go and find my notes from last year for reference.  David has asked us to plan our videos, I suppose I could use Storyboard to help plan the video.

In the class, David has shown us some videos from previous years, one or two were good, one or two were not so good (one have a person doing a silly dance where and when he wasn't supposed to be in the video at all).  So our videos have to be appropriate with what it's about, not just its contents (like audio).  I hope that I'll able to think of a good video for David.

I hope that this week goes well for all of us on the course.

Wish us all luck.

Week 22 - Another week gone

This week has been an interesting one work wise.

On Tuesday, in our troubleshooting class we looked at the Computer Misuse Act 1990 and the penalties are for it.  Later, in Software Development, we looked at the "if" statement of a software.

Yesterday, in Mathematics, we looked at decimal maths where the sums 6.3x10/\(3) equals 6300 and 6.3x10/\(-3) equals 0.0063.  Sounds hard, but really easy, just watch how zeros there are.  In Adrian's Network class, we looked at the concept of LAN (Local Area Network), hubs and switches.  Before that we met up for Responsibilities of Employment.  Last week, we went for that class at the first room mentioned in our timetable (there are three classrooms for the lesson), only to get a message from our lecturers asking where we were.  Later that day, we went to class and told our lecturers that we went to where our timetable told us to go, we even had a photo to prove it.

In PC Passport, we are learning of the databases.  We were asked to create tables, relationships between them, a query and a form.  Creating tables and relationships was easy, but the query wouldn't work at all.  Turns out the query I was trying to make wasn't the query asked for at all.

I just hope that next week will go well for all of us on the course

Wish us all luck.

Week 22 - David's Request for DME

I have started this week, feeling as shattered as last week.

In David's class we are asked to do video for our Digital Media Elements after nominating some song we're interesting in, I'm not so sure what music, or songs, I'm interested in.  I'll listen to music, that fine and easy for me, but picking one I like isn't so easy, cause I listen to bit of everything.  I'm going to have to think very hard for that.

A couple of songs I've thought of was Caledonia and Amazing Grace.  I'll just have to think what other songs I could do, what images and pieces of video I could include for David's project.

I hope that this week goes well for all of us on the course.

Wish us all luck.

75th Blog - Week 21 - End of the First Week of Semester 2

End of the week at last - and I feel somewhat shattered.

We have had to get use to the new times and places.  On Wednesday we went to a room our timetable told us to go to, only to find that the class was in another room! So when we meet our lecturer later, we showed proof that we in the room as told by our timetable.

This semester we seem to be doing PC Passport all over again, covering databases (Access) and spreadsheets (Excel).  We have had a rough plan for the next eighteen weeks of the semester (and the course) left of how we are going to do the class.  Sounds simple, I think that the instructions maybe out-of-date though.  Thankfully, Suzanne has whipped something up for us to have a look at.

I hope that next week will be bit easier for us all.

Wish us all luck.

Week 21 - Learning Adobe Flash Professional CC

For David's classes, we are asked to learn about animations using the software Adobe Flash Professional CC.

Learning the software is  goes by the old saying "easier said than done".  We have been asked to do a sunset animation, and I 'm struggling to understand how do the layers and the movement of the sun (I can more or less do the change of the sun's colour as it sets).  I could do with more information.  Hopefully, I'll find more information about the software and its animation and get it all figured out.  I'm going to need all the luck I can get on that subject.

Wish us all luck.

Week 21 - Start of Semester 2

Semester 2 has started!

We have 18 weeks of this semester before the course ends.  I thought that the new semester started next week.  The new timetable's new times is roughly 50-50 the same and new.  Monday is the same time-wise as is Wednesday.  Tuesday is a later finish.  Thursday is a later start, but a later finish.

For David, we are asked to do a similar job as last year, only a little bigger.  We may learn animation.  We may not have Gordon as our lecturer, but may have someone else.

It has been stressed which of the classes this semester is needed to progress from this level of the course to the next.  I hope that we do well.

Wish us all luck.

Week 20 - Final two weeks of Semester 1

Just this week and next week of Semester 1.  Hard to believe!

For David's class, we have been finishing up on our webpages class.  We've have had two webpage projects: one on the restaurants of the college, and the other one a personal one.  I'm done mine on my favourite books.  For the webpages, we've to do images, videos and forms for the webpages.  I must admit, it has been hard work because we have to do the coding of the webpages and can be confusing, even more if the page, or part of the page, doesn't work.  In our class, a classmate called Ryan helped us test our webpages for our reviews.

I think that I have some resits for Gordon's hardware classes and Suzanne's classes are all but over, but I will come in to make sure that they are, and if they are, I use the tie to double any other work for the other classes.

For my last blog about "On-line Security", I'm happy that it has received a good number of readers.  and I hope that it readers will take notice of its contents and will be safer.

More on On-line Security

In this blog, I'm going to give some details on being secure while on-line.

Browser Setting

A browser is a device that connects a computer to the world wide web.

Password Strength

When people on-line, they use a key called password.  Say that your user profile on computer is like your house on your home street, a password would then become your house's front door key.  A hacker attempting to hacker into your computer's user profile is like a thief attempting to picklock your home's lock.

Make sure that your password is known only to you and easy to remember, but make it difficult for hackers to get.  The longer and more random the password, the more protected your computer and user profile will.  Some password can use different letters for key letters in the password, like the "@" can stand in for the letter "a".  Some of the smaller keys can be replaced with capital letters, so for example, the word "tree" could be used like "tRee", this makes it harder for a hacker to solve.

Encryption Email

The first question to ask is, what is an email? An email is like mail, only it's on the computer and internet.  While mail, like a letter or parcel, can take a couple of days to be delivered, email can be delivered in seconds.

An encrypted email is the same email, only it's encrypted (a bit like a coded message) and that makes it hard to read for the people the encrypted email is for.  Only the person at the receiving end of the encrypted email will be able to read the email.  Emails accounts like Hushmail is a good example for encryption email accounts.

DDOS

Distributed Denial-of-service attack (DDOS) is when a hacker uses a number of computers and servers to hack into your server and computer (it can range from a couple of computers to thousands).  It can make finding the hacker more difficult for the people who wishes to find the hacker.

Computer Viruses
Trojan
A Trojan virus takes it name from the infamous Greek Trojan Horse, in which the Greek army hide a wooden horse in order so that the Trojan army would take the wooden horse inside their city, thinking it was a gift, only be surprised by the Greek army.  In much the same way, a hacker can send an email from a Trojan device that can allow the hacker to access the computer with the computer's user being aware until it's too late.

A way of protecting your computer from a Trojan virus is double-check where the email containing it comes, see if it's from someone you can trust.

Malware
A malware virus is more or less like a cold people can get.  The malware virus gets into a computer, either through a download or by email, and once it's inside the computer, the virus can cause both harm and damage to the computer.  The virus can delete files from the computer and make the computer do the opposite the user wishes to do.

To prevent malware from getting into your computer is do a regular anti-virus check on your computer.

Phishing
Phishing takes its name from the word "fishing".  This virus gets into the computer and starts searching anything that the hacker might like, like passwords to personal internet shopping sites and account numbers for bank accounts.  The hacker could steal private photos from the computer and then release them to the world for all to see and it can cause huge embarrassment and serious harm to the user of the computer.

Spyware
A spyware virus does what its name suggests, the virus gets into the computer and spies about for the hacker who created and sent the virus.  Working much like the phishing virus, the spyware virus can cause harm and embarrassment to the computer's user.

A way of preventing phishing and spyware from getting into your computer is double-check your computer's anti-virus firewall regularly and do a anti-virus run of your computer.

70th Blog - Week 19 - Last Weeks of Semester 1

Hard to believe that Semester 1 is nearly over.  Just a couple of weeks left.

This week seems to be filled with assessments, re-assessments and double-checking our work for our lecturers.  I hope that this week goes well for all of us and that we will complete any unfinished work in time for the end of the semester and that we will be ready for the next semester.

Semester 2 sounds like it's going to be much busier than the first.

Wish us all luck.

Security Sites worth visiting!

One of our classes in this course is called PC Passport, or Internet and On-Line Comms.

For the class, we were asked to look up five websites connected to on-line security

Here they are, and I hope that you will find them interesting and that you will use the information on these websites to keep your computers secure.

http://www.itsecurity.com/

http://www.symantec.com/en/uk/ssl-sem-page/?

http://secunia.com/

http://www.securemac.com/

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/default.aspx

As I said above, I hope that you will find these sites interesting in keeping your computers secure.

For more information, you can visit this website: http://www.networkworld.com/article/2870593/lan-wan/20-useful-it-security-web-sites.html#slide1
It has 20 IT Security Websites for you if you wish for more websites on IT Security.

Wish us all luck

I'm back again

It's good to be back after so long from blogging and I hope to keep it up as best as possible as the course goes on.

After a very restful Christmas and New Year, I hope to finish this semester with all of my tasks done (all that is needed is to make sure that the work is all handed in to our lecturers).  Then the rest of us on the course will see what's in store for us all in the next semester that starts at the end of the month.

Wish us all luck.
